  • In my very first ever game of competitive cricket I was asked to open the batting for my school team. I nervously faced the first ball of the game. It was short. I attempted a pull shot but missed the ball which then crashed into my chest sending me tumbling backwards on to the stumps. Followed by a slow, embarassed walk back to the pavilion. Not the best of starts to a career which has lasted for another 45+ years. I have suffered a few more golden ducks over the years but had many more pleasurable moments such as scoring the winning runs in the last game of the 2011 season that saw Kirby 2nd XI promoted. In 2000 I managed to score 137 not out, my one and only century. Occasionally scored a few important runs which helped to win the odd game, most notably the Geary Cup. Took a few catches, ran a few people out. Took 3 wickets in 4 balls on one of only three occasions when I bowled for Kirby and then somehow, nearing the end of my career, ended the 2008 season by topping the Club and the League batting averages for Division 7, won the 2nd XI fielding award in 2011, and the 2nd XI batting in 2013. Enjoyed every minute along the way and still hoping to play a few more games.
